Week long Zero tolerance initiative in downtown core results in 59 criminal charges and 338 offences

(Ottawa)–The Ottawa Police Service, along with community partners, conducted a week long zero tolerance initiative from June 1-7 from (11:00am-2:30am) in the downtown core.

This initiative initially targeted and focused on Rideau and George Streets between Sussex and Nicholas but later was expanded further down to the area of the Beer Store at Rideau and the Waller Mall.

The Ottawa Police Central Neighborhood Officers (NHO) along with the Demo Team were assisted by OC Transpo Special Constables and City By-law officers.

As a result, 59 criminal charges were laid, including 20 drug related charges. A total of 338 Provincial Offence Notices (PON) were issued. Those include offences under the Liquor License Act, Trespass to Property Act, the Safe Streets Act and the Highway Traffic Act. A number of by-law offences were also cited.

This initiative also lead to the arrest of eight people wanted on warrants and the apprehension of a missing ward of the Children’s Aid Society.

“The results of this joint initiative are impressive and even more so when you consider the positive comments and thank yous that our members have received from the public, local business owners and employees, OC Transpo drivers and a local media agency in the area,” said Acting Inspector Mike Laviolette, Central District Directorate. “This initiative was the result of excellent work by all the members of NHO and Demo Beats Unit and it will no doubt set the tone for this summer.”
