Volunteer Appreciation Week

This week is National Volunteer Appreciation Week and the London Police Service would like to acknowledge the efforts of the members of our Auxiliary Unit.

The Auxiliary Unit is currently comprised of citizens from our community including an ER nurse, a secondary school teacher, a London Transit operator, and small business owners just to name a few. The Auxiliary Unit offers opportunities for citizens to be an integral part of the London Police Service in a volunteer capacity. Each of the 50 Auxiliary Unit members upon selection dedicated 70 hours to training and must commit a minimum of 15 hours per month in police activities.

Auxiliary members perform important duties such as traffic control at parades, Police Week displays, crime prevention programs such as the Auto Theft Reduction Initiative Program (A.T.R.I.P.), Project Speed Watch (traffic calming), search for missing persons, and ride-a-long on police patrols. In total, members of the London Police Service Auxiliary Unit volunteer hours over 10,000 hours of police services that would have to be performed by sworn members. Their efforts reinforce Sir Robert Peel’s principle that “the police are the public and the public are the police.”

Chief Brad Duncan: The London Police Service Auxiliary Unit has a long history of community service and continues to be an integral part of our police service. National Volunteer Appreciation Week is a fitting opportunity for the London Police Service to say thank you to our dedicated volunteers who commit significant time out of their busy lives to help keep our community safe and secure.””
