On Thursday 20 April, 2017 at approximately 12:56pm a Guelph Police traffic officer operating an unmarked cruiser was southbound on the Hanlon Parkway at the off ramp to Laird Road when he was passed by a 2012 Honda Civic travelling well above the speed limit.
The officer noticed the Honda brake suddenly and observed an unmarked OPP cruiser parked on the center median ahead (south of Laird Road).
The Guelph Police officer positioned himself behind the Honda and continued to follow it past the OPP radar location at the speed limit.
Once past that location, the Honda accelerated (followed by the unmarked Guelph Police cruiser) and approximately 200 meters north of Maltby Road registered a speed (on mobile radar) of 133 km/h in an 80 km/h zone (as it continued to pull away from the officer).
The Honda was stopped without incident southbound on the Hanlon Parkway north of Wellington County Road 34.
The 22 year old male driver, a resident of the Barrie area, has been charged with speeding and perform stunt- exceed speed limit by 50 or more km/h. His license has been suspended for a period of 7 days. The car he was operating at the time of this offense was seized for 7 days.
Investigation also revealed that this driver was previously suspended for stunt driving during the month of December 2016.
He will appear in the Guelph Provincial Offences Court in June.
Man charged after assaulting neighbour
Two residents of a Woolwich Street building have not had the best of relationships and on the morning of April 20th, there was a confrontation between the two neighbours in the hallway. One of the men took his cane and struck the other man in the head and hand causing lacerations which required some minor medical attention.
The 73 year old suspect left in his wheelchair and was located a short distance away by police. He was arrested and charged with assault with a weapon and was released to appear in court at a later date.
