(SAUGEEN FIRST NATION, ON) While patrolling the Saugeen First Nation, a Bruce Peninsula Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer observed an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Operator without a helmet and carrying a passenger. The officer signalled to the driver to stop and the driver sped away. The operator subsequently lost control of the ATV and the two occupants fled into the bush.
OPP could not immediately locate the two persons due to the type of terrain. The OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Canine Unit (K9) were called in to assist with locating the parties.
Both parties were subsequently located and arrested. The 15 year old passenger was released and the 18 year old driver was released charges pending.
Upon completion of their investigation, OPP found the ATV was stolen and subsequently charged the 18 year old driver with multiple offences under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) and Criminal Code of Canada (CCC). These charges are as follows: possession of property obtained by crime, no insurance, no helmet, operate ATV with a passenger, operate ATV with no driver’s license, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, fail to report an accident, and fail to remain at the scene of an accident.
The 18 year old was held in custody for a bail hearing on September 14th, 2013 in Walkerton court.
