Huron OPP officers were out in full force this weekend setting up over 20 RIDE check points to ensure motorists were driving sober and not breaking any Liquor Licence Act laws. On the night of September 4, 2009 Huron officers laid charges in more than 10 separate vehicle stops related to a large bush party. All charges involved underage drinkers, young people in possession of liquor or having open liquor in a motor vehicle. As much as we hate to ruin some party fun, we need to try and prevent more serious incidents from occurring later. Alcohol and young people is a very dangerous mix and can lead to collisions, death, sexual assaults and other horrible events that can have life altering results. The ONLY time a young person under the age of 19 may drink or be in possession of alcohol is when they are in their own home under the direct supervision of their parents. A parent is not allowed to supervise someone else’s child drinking alcohol in their presence. It is illegal for kids under 19 to have booze or to drink it. As parents, we are the persons who need to make sure they hear that message from us as well. We have a job to do and it is not the time to be buddies with our kids.
The RIDE checks continued throughout the weekend and we are happy to report no serious injuries occurring during the last long weekend of the summer of 2009.
