At approximately 10:45 p.m. a concerned citizen reported youth entering vehicles in the upper north east side of the city. Responding officers surrounded the area and located two youths who were arrested. A subsequent investigation by the officers and the Community Oriented Response & Enforcement unit revealed that the youths were responsible for other crimes that occurred within the city in the last week.
On September 12, 2013, a Honda CRV had been stolen from an East Side residence and was driven through a public park. This vehicle was later located within the park with severe damage. In another incident on September 15th, a 2007 Kia was stolen from another east side home. This vehicle was later located in the 2000 block of 5th Avenue East where it was completely destroyed by fire.
Both youths have been held in custody pending a bail hearing on September 16th. The youths have been charged with two counts of motor vehicle theft, two counts of mischief and one charge of arson. This is yet another example of where the successful apprehension of the persons involved in the crime came from the cooperation of watchful citizens and the police.
