Two Victims Fall For Computer Repair Scam

(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON) – The South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is sending another warning for residents to watch for cons and scams following 2 more reports on the computer repair scam. Both reports were received on June 1, 2015; 1 from a resident in the Municipality of Brockton, the other from a resident of Arran-Elderslie Township. In both cases, the scam was successful and access was granted to the computer.

The computer repair scam has been operating for a long time. If you feel that your computer needs service, consult a reputable repair technician – don’t allow a stranger on the phone to access your computer.

Fraud is a multi-million dollar enterprise that will only stop when the scammers stop making money. Trust your instincts, not the stranger on the phone, sending the emails or standing at your door.

The South Bruce OPP is requesting anyone with information that can assist police to call 1-888-310-1122. Should you wish to remain anonymous, you can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or send a web-tip to crimestop-gb.org, where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.
