For the second time this week, the Owen Sound Police Service investigated serious criminal allegations only to determine the unrelated acts of violence never actually took place.
Owen Sound Police Service Inspector Stephen MacKinnon stated, “Two Owen Sound males now face criminal charges of their own because they fabricated stories of being assaulted and threatened and robbed. Uniformed Officers took the initial complaints and members of the Criminal Investigation Branch continued the investigations and determined the allegations to be false.â€
An 18-year-old Owen Sound male made several reports last weekend that he, his mother and two friends were threatened at their westside home several times over the span of those three days by a male. The alleged victim even reported being assaulted by this same male outside the police station while there on Friday to report the first round of threats. The alleged assault involved the use of a knife being placed to his chest.
In an unrelated case, a 20-year-old Owen Sound male reported on Tuesday that he had been stopped in the 1000 block of 3rd Avenue East by two males who demanded money. When the alleged victim refused to comply with the demand he said the two males punched him several times in the ribs before stealing a small amount of cash from his wallet.
In both cases, the alleged attackers were known to the males.
“The amount of resources spent during this week only to determine in the end these were false allegations could have been better utilized to continue our on-going investigations into actual crimes that were committed. Anyone who causes our police officers to conduct an investigation into an offence(s) that was not actually committed will be charged with Public Mischief,†said MacKinnon.
The 18-year-old male was charged with two counts of Public Mischief and one count of Breach of Probation. He was released from police custody to appear in court in Owen Sound on the 26th of September to answer to his charges. The 20-year-old male was charged with one count of Public Mischief, and was released from police custody to appear in court on the 12th of September.
