Two Deer Struck In Separate Collisions

On January 15, 2015 at 4:24 a.m., a vehicle driving on Wellington Street West near Imperial Road struck a deer. The vehicle received minor damage and the deer ran off.

A second deer was struck on January 15 at 8:41 p.m. in the area of Victoria Road and Arkell Road, killing it. The vehicle received minor damage. There were no reports of injuries to vehicle occupants in either incident.

Late fall to early winter is prime time for deer-car face-offs. So remember to:

Slow down

In the unfortunate event that contact with a deer is imminent, lowering your speed will allow for greater reaction time and softer impact. The lower your speed, the better your ability to control your vehicle in an impending collision, lessening the potential for vehicle damage and injury.

Keep your gaze a car’s length ahead.

Deer hardly operate on your schedule, so it’s important to remain alert around the clock.

Maintain a viewing distance of at least a car’s length ahead to increase chances of seeing oncoming objects (like deer) before colliding with them. Expand your line of sight to include both sides of the road, especially when driving through wooded or farm areas.

If you do strike a deer, keep your distance from it. Hurt or otherwise agitated animals can become aggressive. Call police.
