Runaway truck

On January 12, 2016 the Guelph Police went to Dunlop Drive for a reported collision. It is alleged that at 11:35 a.m. a 53-year-old male was operating a tractor trailer combination on the property of Cargill Foods. He was in the process of detaching the 2012 Volvo Tractor from the trailer and exited the cab of the truck. As he was working in the area of the trailer, the tractor began to roll away towards several parked trailers. The driver ran after the runaway truck (for a distance of approximately 30 meters) and as he grabbed onto the driver’s door, the open door struck two parked trailers causing the open door to strike him in the chest as he was pinned between the door and the truck chassis. The runaway truck then came to rest lodged under a fully loaded trailer causing that trailer to tip and come to rest against another trailer parked beside it.

The driver of the tractor trailer was transported to Guelph General Hospital where he was treated and released for a severe contusion to his chest.

A total of four parked trailers were struck by the runaway truck with two sustaining significant damage to their landing gear” (support legs).

Total damage is estimated at approximately $50
