Twenty Break And Enters In Guelph

Over the weekend the Guelph Police investigated twenty reported break and enters. Most of the entries were to sheds in the rear yards of the residences or garages and some also had vehicles entered. Most of the entries were through unlocked doors or windows. The locations included three on Marlborough Road, three on Paul Avenue, two on Delhi Street, two on Speedvale Avenue East as well as single reports from Elizabeth Street, Stuart Street, Grange Road, Hearn Avenue, Fife Road, Macdonell Street and Colonial Drive. In several of the incidents bicycles were reported stolen.

A High School on College Avenue West was entered and property damage was reported.

Two break and enters led to an arrest. An attached business and residence on Wilson Street was entered in the early morning hours of December 6 when a male smashed a window to gain entry to the business. He then smashed glass to gain entry to the residence. The resident woke to the sounds and called police who attended and arrested the male.

A 38-year-old London man has been charged with two counts of break and enter and breach of probation. He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing on December 7, 2015.

Theft from cars

Over the weekend the Guelph Police received nine reports from Guelph residents about thefts from their cars. The locations were Truesdale Crescent, Wilkie Crescent, William Street, Queen Street, University Avenue, Mary Street, Clive Avenue, Marlborough Road and Laughland Lane.

This crime is easily avoided by locking your cars, keeping valuables out of sight or removed from your vehicle and parked in a well-lit and visible area where possible. Festive R.I.D.E.

On December 5/6, 2015 between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m., the Guelph Police Service conducted a RIDE program. 485 vehicles were checked by officers with thirteen roadside screening tests being administered. Eleven of the thirteen drivers were found to be within the legal limit. Of the other two drivers, a 57-year-old Guelph male was issued a three day driving licence suspension for registering an alert and a 19-year-old Guelph male was issued a twenty four hour driver licence suspension for a Novice Driver registering alcohol. Both drivers had their vehicles towed from the RIDE lanes.

Guelph Police would like to remind drivers that they will continue to conduct random spot checks between now and the holiday season for persons driving under the influence of alcohol. Registering breath samples over 80 mgs of alcohol per 100 mls of blood will result in an immediate 90 day Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension. Convictions for impaired driving and driving with over 80 mgs will both result in a minimum of twelve month driving prohibition.

Impaired driver arrested

On December 5, 2015 at 3:50 a.m., the Guelph Police received the report of a possible impaired driver in the area of Woodlawn Road and Elmira Road from an off duty Waterloo Regional police officer. Police located the vehicle on Fife Road but the driver pulled the vehicle over and ran into backyards. Guelph Police Services dog General attended and after a 20 minute search located the male and he was arrested.

Jamie Embro, 29 years of Guelph has been charged with impaired driving and trespass by night. He will appear in court on December 22, 2015.

Impaired driver arrested

On December 4, 2015 at 7:07 p.m., Guelph Police Detectives observed a vehicle in the McDonalds parking lot, located at Gordon Street and Surrey Street West. The vehicle was attempting to turn around in the parking lot and while doing so reversed into a parked car causing damage to the parked vehicle. A traffic stop was conducted, the male driver was determined to be impaired and was arrested.

Robert Mckay, 38 years of Guelph has been charged with impaired driving and drive over 80 mg. He will appear in court on December 18, 2015.

Impaired driver arrested

On December 5, 2015 at 9:13 p.m., the Guelph Police received the report of a possible impaired driver heading into Guelph on Gordon Street from the Aberfoyle area. Police located the vehicle on Gordon Street near South Ring Road and a traffic stop was conducted. It was determined the male driver was impaired and he was arrested.

Buhendwa Mushamuka, 28 years of Guelph has been charged with impaired driving and drive over 80mg. He will appear in court on January 8, 2016.

Fire on Bristol Street

Release courtesy GFD: On December 6, 2015 at approximately 1:00 a.m., the Guelph Fire Department responded to a reported apartment fire at 245 Bristol Street. Crews from the Elizabeth Street, Stone Road, Imperial Road, Speedvale Avenue and Wyndham Street stations all responded to find a fire in the bedroom area of the unit. The fire was quickly brought under control.

Guelph Fire prevention was on scene conducting an investigation of the incident at this time.

There were no firefighter injuries.

Fire on Cassino Avenue

Release courtesy GFD: On December 5, 2015 at approximately 11:00 a.m., the Guelph Fire Department responded to a reported kitchen fire at 51 Cassino Avenue. Crews from the Elizabeth Street, Stone Road, Imperial Road and Wyndham Street stations all responded to find a fire in the kitchen area as reported. The fire was quickly brought under control.

After investigation by Guelph Fire Prevention it was determined that the cause of the fire was overheated cooking oil in two frying pans on the stove that ignited. A person at the residence tried to remove the pans to the exterior of the home but was not completely successful and received second degree burns to his arms and first degree burns to his face. He was treated at hospital and released. There were no firefighter injuries.

Estimated damage has been placed at approximately 40,000 dollars.
