During the morning of January 5, 2017, Waterloo Regional Police officers conducted a Commercial Motor Vehicle safety blitz in St. Jacobs. Members of the Traffic Unit inspected 14 Commercial Vehicles, laying a total of 26 charges including ones for overweight vehicles, inoperable brakes, failing to have an annual inspection sticker, improper trailer brakes, insecure load, improper tires, unsafe vehicle and improper muffler.
The most notable truck that was inspected had the following safety issues: – Vise Grips holding the truck’s brake line together – No brake fluid in the truck – 6 of the 8 brakes on the truck/trailer were not working – The latch holding the trailer to the truck was not secure – Annual inspection stickers were both missing – Cracked exhaust system – The rear suspension shifted off the frame – The emergency break away cable was inoperable – One of the truck’s tires had 12 psi of air (requires 80 psi) – No parking brake – Trailer brake lines cut – Cattle trailer overweight by 3,100kg In this case, officers made sure the cattle were transported safely to their destination. The vehicle was taken out of service.
