Truck Loaded With Corn Ends Up In Ditch

TRUCK LOADED WITH SEED CORN TAKES THE DITCH

(MUNICIPALITY OF WEST PERTH, ON) On Friday March 09, 2012 shortly before 11:30 a.m., Perth County OPP officers were dispatched to a collision involving a grain truck along Hwy 23 south of Mitchell. Investigation revealed that the truck, owned by a Lakeside company, while travelling north bound on Hwy 23 near line 32 left the roadway, entered onto the soft gravel shoulder, and rolled into the east ditch. It came to rest on its passenger side, spilling some of the seed corn it was transporting. The 73 year old driver from Thamesford did not sustain injuries as a result of this collision. At the time of the crash it was windy with extensive ground drifting.

Perth County OPP officers closed Hwy 23 for a short period of time until it was determined that the truck would be removed on Saturday when the road and weather conditions are expected to improve. At that time a sucker truck will be used to remove much of the seed corn which will allow the truck to be up righted. The truck is located well off the roadway and is not a danger to traffic.

On Friday between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Perth County OPP officers responded to 8 crashes within the County. The majority of these collisions involved single motor vehicles leaving the roadway while a few involved minor multi vehicle crashes. As a result of these collisions only two persons were transported to local hospitals as a precautionary measure.

Motorists are reminded to slow down and anticipate poor visibility and slush on the roadways as ground drifting may continue throughout the evening and night.
