On Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at approximately 10:40 a.m., members of the London Police Foot Patrol Unit located a male trespasser sleeping on the premises of 181 King Street.
The male was initially unresponsive and officers were unsure if he was sleeping or possibly under the influence of narcotics. The male was eventually woken and while speaking with officers he grabbed a hold of a black handgun. The officers issued verbal commands and the male subsequently dropped the weapon and was taken into custody. Upon arrest the male proceeded to provide a false name to police. He was later identified as Sheldon Funston who had five outstanding warrants for his arrest.
The weapon was determined to be an airsoft gun however its appearance was that of an actual handgun.
The London Police Service want to remind the public that although airsoft guns can be purchased without a Firearms Licence they can easily be mistaken as a firearm and precautions should be used when carrying or handling them.
As a result of the investigation, 20-year-old Sheldon Funston of no fixed address, has been charged with the following Criminal Code of Canada offences:
– Public Mischief Providing a False Name, contrary to section 140(1)(b)
– Possession of an Imitation Weapon, contrary to section 88(1)
