Lock your doors and windows, even if you don’t plan to be away for a long time

Make sure you don’t leave gifts or other valuables in plain sight

Don’t hide a spare key outside, thieves look for hidden keys

If you’re going to be away for an extended period, have a trusted neighbour, friend or family member watch your home

Consider a timer; have lights, radio, TV, etc. turn on at random times so your house appears occupied

Don’t let newspapers or fliers to pile up and arrange to have your driveway cleared if it snows while you’re away

Don’t leave clues on your answering machine, Facebook or other social media to suggest that you are away

Consider engraving your property so it’s easier to identify it it’s stolen
