TELEPHONE SCAMS

(MIDDLESEX COUNTY, ON) The Middlesex County Ontario Provincial Police (O.P.P.) continues to investigate a variety of scams that are costing people large sums of hard earned money.

One of the most recent scams involves what is known as the “Grandparent Scam”. This is when a grandparent is contacted by a group of individuals attempting get money. The suspect will attempt to pass themselves off as a grandchild or by telling them that their grandchild has been injured or in trouble with the law. The suspect will then seek to have funds transferred through Western Union, to assist their grandchildren with medical care or release from police custody. Ultimately the grandparent will later find out their family member was never in need of assistance and that their money is gone.

Other scams that have occurred recently were in relation to sending money overseas in return for gold or property. In all our cases, the claims made to individuals have been fraudulent, resulting in loss of money.

Scams are becoming far too common and people should be aware and cautious when receiving such calls. Family and friends should bring these types of scams to their attention so when they do receive these calls they are prepared and simply HANG UP!”
