Suspicious door-to-door solicitation prompts safety reminders for residents

The Waterloo Regional Police Service is investigating reports of a person travelling door-to-door posing as a representative from the ‘Crime Prevention Council’ and soliciting money from the residents of the Activa Avenue area in Kitchener.

The Waterloo Region Crime Prevention Council does not partake in door-to-door engagement of this nature, did not sanction this solicitation, and was not in the Activa Avenue area at the time of the incidents.

Residents are reminded to use caution when responding to a salesperson at their home. The following safety tips are suggested to promote safe and informed door-to-door sales.

• Request proper identification from door-to-door sales people when considering a financial contribution

• Ask questions about the organization being represented

• Remember that you are not obligated to provide any personal information and use caution when considering providing documentation, answering questions, or signing paperwork

• Protect yourself by doing research before buying anything at your door

• A salesperson does not have the right to enter your home without permission

• If you don’t feel comfortable, don’t open your door and don’t be afraid to ask the person to leave

Any suspicious incidents should be reported to the Waterloo Regional Police Service. For tips about protecting your property, fraud prevention, and personal safety, visit www.wrps.on.ca.
