(MIDDLESEX COUNTY, ON) – On April 21, 2018, at approximately 8:45 p.m., a member of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) West Region (WR) London Highway Safety Division (HSD) was on patrol westbound on highway 401, near Dorchester Road.
To the officer’s surprise, two (2) vehicles immediately beside the unmarked police cruiser appeared to line up side-by-side at highway speeds. The vehicles suddenly accelerated and engaged in a dangerous street race at speeds in excess of 170 kilometers per hour (km/hr), in the 100 km/hr zone.
The officer initiated a traffic stop and both vehicles were intercepted.
As a result of that investigation, a 19-year-old, male, from Windsor, Ontario and a 22-year-old, male, from St. Thomas, Ontario were charged with Stunt Driving pursuant to the Highway Traffic Act (HTA). Both accused received roadside drivers licence suspensions and their vehicles were impounded for seven (7) days.
At approximately 1:00 a.m., the same OPP HSD officer was northbound on Highbury Avenue. The officer observed a motor vehicle southbound on Highbury Avenue, passing vehicles and travelling at a high rate of speed. The officer had to take evasive action to avoid a head-on collision. The vehicle was measured to be travelling in excess of 140 km/hr, in the posted 80 km/hr zone.
As a result of that investigation, a 32-year-old, male, from Langton, Ontario has been charged with Stunt Driving pursuant to the HTA. The driver received a seven (7) drivers licence suspension and the involved vehicle as impounded for seven (7) days.
This driving behaviour is dangerous and could have easily resulted in tragedy. Drivers must obey the rules of the road; it is not an option or a suggestion
