Stop For Busses

BACK TO SCHOOL, TIME TO START THINKING STUDENT SAFETY

(KINCARDINE, ON.) – In just over 2 weeks, area schools will be open for another year of learning and the South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) want motorists, parents and students to start thinking safety. The start of the new school year means the return of school buses, young cyclists and young pedestrians.

Parents please take the time to discuss safe bike riding and safe walking with your children:

# All cyclists under 18 MUST wear an approved helmet
# All cyclists need to keep their eyes and ears open for cars
# Cyclists must follow the rules of the road – no stunts on the roadway
# Walkers use the sidewalks and cross the streets at intersections

The South Bruce OPP would like to remind vehicle owners they could be legally responsible if their vehicle fails to stop for a school bus, even if they aren’t the driver. When a school bus is stopped, with red lights flashing and stop arm extended, drivers must stop their vehicles. First time offenders face a penalty of 6 demerit points and a maximum fine of $2,000.

Detachment Commander Steve Porter takes traffic safety very seriously. “It’s imperative that we all work together for the safety of school children. Slow down, leave lots of time to get to your destination and watch for students”.

Anyone having information that can assist Police in these investigations is asked to call South Bruce OPP at 519-396-3341 (Kincardine), 519-881-3130 (Walkerton) or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222 -TIPS (8477). OPP Dispatch – 1-888-310-1122
