(HURON EAST, ON) – Changing people’s mindset to lock their vehicle doors and take the ignition key out of the vehicle is proving to be a challenge for Huron OPP. Approximately 60 % of all stolen vehicles in Huron, Perth and Wellington Counties over the last six months have seen the owner leave the keys in the vehicle.
Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers responded to a vehicle theft yesterday morning in Huron East. The owner reported to police his pickup truck was stolen during the early morning hours of September 30, 2015 from a farm located on McNaught Line. The unlocked pickup truck had been parked near a shop on the property with the keys left inside the vehicle.
This morning, just after 10:00 a.m. Huron OPP officers received information from a property owner on McNabb Line that a pickup truck had been driven into his corn field and was left abandoned. Officers that are currently on scene have confirmed the stolen pickup truck was the 2001 GMC Sierra pickup that had been stolen from McNaught Line. The vehicle has been heavily damaged.
Anyone with information that may assist with this investigation is asked to call Huron OPP at (519) 524-8314 or 1-888-310-1122.
Should you wish to remain anonymous, you may call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.
