Spilled Chicken Trimmings Results In Road Closure

(TOWNSHIP OF PERTH EAST, ON) On Tuesday July 07, 2015, around 9:15 p.m., Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers were dispatched to a dangerous condition involving debris on Perth Line 56 east of Perth Road 119 (Topping).

Upon arrival officers observed a 100 meter section of Perth Line 56 (both lanes) covered with chicken renderings. The road surface was coated and slippery, creating a traffic hazard.

Investigation into this spill revealed that a Volvo truck loaded with chicken trimmings was driving on Perth Line 56 when the driver applied the brakes hard to avoid another vehicle. The truck avoided the other vehicle, however the contents of the truck which had not been covered with a tarp spilled onto the roadway due to the sudden stop.

The OPP closed Perth Line 56 between Perth Line 56a and Road 116 from 9:30 p.m. until approximately 2:30 a.m. July 08, 2015. The Spill Action Centre and the Ontario Ministry of the Environment were advised of the spill. A hazardous material technician attended the scene who oversaw the clean-up.

No injuries were reported in this incident. The OPP has charged a 44 year old male from St.Marys with; “insecure load – commercial motor vehicle”, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.
