Spike Belt Used To Stop Kelly James RILEY

(SOUTHWEST MIDDLESEX, ON) – On June 1, 2018, at approximately 4:00 p.m., a member of the Middlesex County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) attempted to stop a motor vehicle for a traffic infraction. The vehicle failed to stop for police and fled the area.

The officer did not initiate a suspect apprehension pursuit (SAP).

Members of the Middlesex County OPP, Oneida Nation of the Thames First Nation Police and the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation Police responded to the area and conducted general patrols for the suspect vehicle, described as a dark coloured Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV).

Moments later, police received a traffic complaint of a dark colored SUV driving erratically on Longwoods Road, near Delaware.

Officers intercepted the vehicle on Muncey Road and a tire deflation device (TDD) was deployed. The TDD was successful and the driver was taken into custody.

Further investigation revealed that the driver had been involved in a theft of fuel from a local gas station and that the vehicle had been taken without consent from the owner.

Officer also determined that the 41-year-old, male, driver of the vehicle had consumed alcohol. The driver was arrested and transported to a police station for further testing.

As a result of the police investigation, Kelly James RILEY, of Chippewas of The Thames First Nation, Ontario has been charged with the following offences pursuant to the Criminal Code of Canada (CC):

Flight from Police

Theft Under $5000

Dangerous Driving

Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle

Take Motor Vehicle Without Consent

The accused was held in custody and appeared before the courts on June 2, 2018.
