Speeding Drunk Driver Caught In Bayfield – Name Released

(BLUEWATER, ON) – A 45-year-old from Sarnia will be making a trip to court later this spring following a traffic stop that took place south of Bayfield last Friday afternoon.

At approximately 3:13 p.m. on March 31, 2017 a Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer spotted a Chevrolet van travelling northbound on Bluewater Veteran’s Highway near Hendrick Road at a high rate of speed. The officer confirmed his visual observations with a RADAR device and confirmed the vehicle to be travelling at a speed in excess of the 80 km/h speed limit.

Upon stopping the vehicle the investigating officer spoke with the driver and made some observations that led the officer to believe the driver’s ability to drive was impaired by alcohol.

The driver was placed under arrest and was transported to the Huron OPP Detachment for breath tests. He subsequently provided two samples of his breath to a qualified Intoxilizer Technician and both of his samples registered over the legal limit.

As a result, William SMITH, 45 years of age from Sarnia has been charged with Impaired Operation, Drive Motor Vehicle with Over 80 Milligrams of Alcohol and Speeding. He has been released from custody with a scheduled court appearance set for May 1, 2017 at the Ontario Court of Justice -. He also received an automatic 90-day driver’s licence suspension and his vehicle was towed and impounded.
