Last night at the FanTastic Event, Special Olympics Ontario London honoured the London Police Service and the London Law Enforcement Torch Run Committee with its highest community award, 2013 Fans of the Year, for our support of Special Olympics in London. Chief Brad Duncan accepted the award on behalf of the women and men of the London Police Service who volunteer their time to fundraise, coach, socialize and play challenge games with the athletes.
Special Olympics Ontario London athlete Scott Tennant shared his perspective of the value to him and other athletes of the involvement of the London Police Service with Special Olympics. He spoke about friendships, coaching and even his opportunity to help promote Special Olympics through the Law Enforcement Torch Run events like the NHL Oldtimers Hockey game.
Chief Duncan, in his acceptance speech, reinforced how much we admire the athletes. “As police officers, we are considered heroes for the job we do every day, but to us, you are our heroes. As athletes, you train hard, compete with heart, and, win or lose, you appreciate your fellow competitors.†Special Olympics Athletes are true athletes who represent the true meaning of sport.
The London Law Enforcement Torch Run Committee is consistently one of the top fundraisers for the Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run (OLETR). Last weekend at the International Law Enforcement Torch Run Conference, the Ontario LETR received the Diamond Award for raising over $1Million for Special Olympics and were chosen for the highest honour, Guardians of the Flame, for being the top program in the world. Sergeant Derek Spence and Sergeant Mark McGugan were in attendance to receive the award with the OLETR.
