Spanish Freelotto Scam Alert

(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON) The South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is sending another warning to area residents about unsolicited letters, emails and phone calls. Unsolicited means that you didn’t ask for it.

On January 28, 2013 at 2:30 pm, the South Bruce OPP received a letter from a resident in the Municipality of Kincardine with instructions on collecting a lottery win. The Spanish Sweepstake Freelotto prize of $1,815,950 is claimed by contacting the Fast Services Securities office by phone or email. The letter was correctly identified as a scam and no response was sent back.

Technology allows modern con artists to come up with very convincing scams. They will often use the name of a real company in order to gain your trust. There is no magic to preventing fraud, if something seems too good to be true, it likely is. If you receive a letter from the Spanish Sweepstake Freelotto, the first thing you need to ask is How did I win a lottery that I didn’t have a ticket for?

Fraud is a billion dollar enterprise that will only stop when the scammers stop making money. Anyone interested in more information on fraud can contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Call centre at 1 888 495 8501 or check online at http//:www.antifraudcentre.ca.

The South Bruce OPP is requesting anyone with information that can assist police to call 1-888-310-1122. Should you wish to remain anonymous, you can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or send a web-tip to crimestop-gb.org, where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.
