(AURORA, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reported that eight people lost their lives in five separate motor vehicle collisions on Ontario roads and one person was killed in an off-road vehicle incident over the Thanksgiving long weekend. These incidents bring the total number of deaths in OPP jurisdiction 269 in 2012 compared to 225 at this point in 2011.

Over the weekend, the OPP took part in Operation Impact, a national initiative to improve road safety, save lives and reduce serious injuries through increased awareness and compliance with traffic safety laws.

The OPP targeted speeding, aggressive driving, distracted driving and occupant restraint during the campaign, with officers laying more than 11,700 charges relating to the four main causal factors in road fatalities.

In addition, South Bruce OPP officers handed out 42 tickets for Fail to properly wear seatbelt during the Fall Seatbelt Campaign.

“The Operation Impact campaign has ended, but South Bruce OPP officers will remain vigilant in their enforcement of traffic safety laws as we work cooperatively with our police partners to make Canada’s roads the safest in the world” – Inspector Scott Smith, detachment commander, South Bruce OPP.
