SOUTH BRUCE OPP CHECKS VEHICLES TO PROMOTE LOCK IT OR LOSE IT

(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON) – A professional car thief can steal your car in less than 30 seconds. Leaving your vehicle unlocked or valuables in plain sight just makes their job easier. The South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) promotes the Lock it or Lose it initiative in order to help protect your vehicle and your valuables. Between November 1, 2013 and November 15, 2013, members of the South Bruce OPP conducted vehicle spot checks.

In Chesley, 324 vehicles were checked. 66 vehicles (20%) were found unlocked. 1 vehicle was found with the keys in the ignition and 1 vehicle was found with valuables in plain sight.

In Kincardine, 441 vehicles were checked. 72 vehicles (6%) were found unlocked.

In Lucknow, 140 vehicles were checked. 21 vehicles (7%) were found unlocked. 1 vehicle was found with the keys in the ignition.

In Walkerton 645 vehicles were checked. 89 vehicles (7%) were found unlocked. 1 vehicle was found with the keys in the ignition.

The South Bruce OPP reminds you roll up the windows, lock the doors and pocket the keys every time you leave your vehicle unattended. It’s best not to leave valuable objects in your vehicle. If you are leaving valuable items in your car, don’t leave them in plain sight.

The South Bruce OPP is requesting anyone with information that can assist police to call 1-888-310-1122. Should you wish to remain anonymous, you can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or send a web-tip to crimestop-gb.org, where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.
