Snowmobile Damages Crop

(TOWNSHIP OF PERTH SOUTH, ON) On Tuesday evening January 03, 2012 Perth County OPP officers were called to a farm on Hwy 7 south of Line 16 (between Wildwood Lake and Stratford) where the landowner reported damage done to his crop.

Investigation revealed that at approximately 4 p.m. on January 3rd an unknown snowmobile rider had driven across the rear width of the complainant’s farm causing damage to Winter Wheat seedlings in the field. The ground underneath the snow is wet and not frozen causing damage to the seedlings.

The Perth County OPP receives numerous calls each winter from farmers and property owners who report damage caused by Snowmobiles and ATV’s that trespass on their land. Snowmobiles must not be operated on private property without the owner’s permission; violators may be subject to a charge of Trespassing. Snowmobile riders are urged to utilize the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs trails in Perth County for safe riding. These trails form part of an extensive Ontario wide network of trails which are groomed, signed and patrolled. A trail permit is required to use approved snowmobile trails once declared open for use.
