Snow Squall Watch In Effect – Hazardous Driving Conditions Continue

4:52 AM EST Friday 09 January 2015
Snow squall watch in effect for:

Goderich – Bluewater – Southern Huron County
Listowel – Milverton – Northern Perth County
Stratford – Mitchell – Southern Perth County
Wingham – Blyth – Northern Huron County

Snow squall activity has now shifted north of the area. However, as winds become westerly then northwesterly with a cold frontal passage this morning, snow squalls are expected to move into the region again. Under the strongest snow squalls, snowfall amounts of 10 to 15 cm per 12 hours are possible.

Hazardous winter driving conditions are expected to continue today with near zero visibility possible from blowing snow and bursts of heavy snow in the strongest snow squalls.

Highway 21 near Lake Huron remains closed due to weather conditions this morning.

Lake effect flurries and and local snow squalls will continue to affect the region tonight, before slowly drifting northward on Saturday.

Snow squalls cause weather conditions to vary considerably, changes from clear skies to heavy snow within just a few kilometres are common. Visibility may be significantly and suddenly reduced to near zero. Road closures are possible.

Snow Squall Watches are issued when conditions are favourable for the formation of bands of snow that could produce intense accumulating snow or near zero visibilities.
