Snow Squall Watch For Southern Perth and Southern Huron

10:49 AM EST Friday 09 January 2015
Snow squall watch in effect for:

Goderich – Bluewater – Southern Huron County

Stratford – Mitchell – Southern Perth County

Lake effect flurries and local snow squalls continue to be generate off Lake Huron and Georgian Bay and warnings are in effect for areas closer to the shores where hazardous conditions are expected. Watched areas may require warnings if the squalls shift or intensify further. Under the strongest snow squalls, snowfall amounts of 10 to 15 cm per 12 hours are possible along with significantly reduced visibilities in heavy snow and blowing snow.

As winds become more westerly this evening, the snow squalls are forecast to shift north, mainly affecting areas east of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. Westerly winds are expected to persist into Sunday.

Snow squalls cause weather conditions to vary considerably, changes from clear skies to heavy snow within just a few kilometres are common. Visibility may be significantly and suddenly reduced to near zero. Road closures are possible.

Snow Squall Watches are issued when conditions are favourable for the formation of bands of snow that could produce intense accumulating snow or near zero visibilities.
