Snow squall warning in effect for:
Goderich – Bluewater – Southern Huron County
Stratford – Mitchell – Southern Perth County
Wingham – Blyth – Northern Huron County
Snow squalls continue in a flow of very cold arctic air over the Great Lakes. Local snowfall rates of 10 to 20 cm per 12 hours are likely in the strongest snow squalls. Gusty winds will also result in significant blowing snow.
Off of Georgian Bay, the most intense snow squall activity is expected to remain to the west of the city of Barrie. Locations such as Collingwood, Meaford, Dundalk and Shelburne are expected to be affected. Snow squalls may penetrate as far inland as Orangeville as well.
Off of Lake Huron, snow squalls are affecting much of Huron – Perth early this morning. The strongest bands are expected to eventually lock in over areas such as Grand Bend, Strathroy and extend towards Port Stanley later this morning. Extreme northeastern portions of Lambton county are likely to be affected as well. Although the city of London will be affected, the most intense activity is expected to occur just to the west of the city. Travel on highway 402 and the 401 will likely be very difficult if not impossible at times today.
The snow squalls are expected to shift to the north this evening as winds become more westerly.
Snow squalls cause weather conditions to vary considerably, changes from clear skies to heavy snow within just a few kilometres are common. Travel is expected to be extremely hazardous due to reduced visibility. Road closures are possible.
Snow Squall Warnings are issued when bands of snow form that produce intense accumulating snow or near zero visibilities.
