Snow Squall Warning – 60cm Snow & Zero Visibility – Travel Not Recommended

5:40 AM EST Monday 18 January 2016

Snow squall warning in effect for:

Goderich – Bluewater – Southern Huron County

Listowel – Milverton – Northern Perth County

Stratford – Mitchell – Southern Perth County

Wingham – Blyth – Northern Huron County

Snow squalls have developed in many areas as forecast and are expected to continue today. Snowfall rates of several centimetres per hour are possible under the strongest bands.

A clap or two of thunder is also possible in the strongest snow squalls later today and this evening. Lightning was detected a few times near Goderich last night.

Additionally, strong and gusty northwest winds may carry the snow squalls well inland, and also result in areas of blowing snow. Sudden nil visibility in blowing snow and bursts of heavy snow is likely.

While snow squall bands often shift or change their orientation during an event, there is potential for some of these snow squalls to remain relatively stationary later today and into this evening. Should this occur, total snowfall amounts could be significant. To the lee of Lake Huron, most likely in a swath from near Amberly to Kincardine southeast to near Listowel to Palmerston, total snowfall accumulations could reach 30 to 60 cm.

Dangerous winter driving conditions with frequent nil visibility in whiteout conditions from blowing snow and bursts of heavy snow are expected. Travel is not recommended.

The snow squalls may persist into Tuesday in this longer lived event, although they are expected to shift their orientation and weaken somewhat beginning late this evening.

Snow squalls cause weather conditions to vary considerably; changes from clear skies to heavy snow within just a few kilometres are common. Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow. Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop. Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Road closures are possible. For information on emergency plans and kits go to http://www.getprepared.gc.ca/
