Sextortion Scam Alert

(ELGIN COUNTY, ON) – The Elgin County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has recently investigated a scam in which a male was targeted for approximately $7500.

The sextortion scam, which is active throughout Canada on social media works like this.

Normally the sextortion involves a male victim who accepts an unsolicited friend request via Facebook or WeChat. The woman then asks the male to video chat with her.

Online sexual activity happens and the video is recorded. The perpetrators then demand money or they will send the video to the male’s social media contacts.

Police are reminding the public to not fall victim to such a scam. Remember to not accept friend request from unknown sources.
