SEND $100 OR WE CALL THE POLICE

(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON) On March 20, 2013 at 8:41 am, the South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of a computer scam from a resident in the Municipality of Kincardine. Ransomware has become the latest computer scam to go viral. A pop up appears to advise that you must send $100 or the police will be told that you look at porn online. Another variation is a pop up that advises the law enforcement officials will be seizing your computer if you don’t send money.

Technology allows a savvy scammer to create any con that they can dream up. Your best defence against these attempts is to ignore them. If you receive one that bothers you, verify it. Once you make contact or send money, they will continue to bother you.

Remember, Fraud is a multi-billion dollar per year business that will only stop when the con artists stop getting your money. Anyone interested in more information on Fraud can call 1 888 495 8501 or check online at http://www.antifraudcentre.ca/.

The South Bruce OPP is requesting anyone with information that can assist police to call 1-888-310-1122. Should you wish to remain anonymous, you can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or send a web-tip to crimestop-gb.org, where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.
