Scent Of Freshly Burnt Weed At RIDE Results In Charges

(PERTH COUNTY, ON) – On August 10, 2019, members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Perth County detachment were conducting Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) programs.

The first program was operated on Line 20 in the Municipality of West Perth.

The male driver of a sedan entered the RIDE program and the officer detected the odour of freshly burnt cannabis.

Mykal BRYAN, 25-years-old of Ajax was charged with having care or control of vehicle with cannabis readily available and issued a Provincial Offence Notice (PON).

The second program was operated on Line 87 in the Municipality of North Perth.

The male driver of a sedan entered the RIDE program and the officer detected the odour of freshly burnt cannabis.

Nathan DOUGLAS, 40-years-old of Clifford was charged with having care or control of vehicle with cannabis readily available and issued a Provincial Offence Notice (PON).

Transporting cannabis – similar to the rules for alcohol, it is illegal to transport cannabis in a motorized vehicle (such as a car or boat) if it is:

open (unfastened”) and not in its original packaging

not packed in baggage and is readily available to anyone in the vehicle”
