Waterloo Regional Police are alerting the community to a series of distraction thefts that have been occurring in our Region. Since February 2015, police have been made aware of 5 occurrences of distraction thefts involving a male/female team selling fake gold jewelry from a vehicle. In many of these incidents, a victim is approached on the street and may be asked for directions or told that the suspects need money for an emergency situation. They are then asked to purchase “gold” jewelry, which later is determined to be fake. In some cases the female has placed a necklace over the victim’s head, discreetly swapping this for the victim’s real gold jewelry. One victim’s loss is estimated at $4000. The male suspect has been described as having brown skin, possibly South Asian, 45yrs, short brown or grey hair, sometimes has a moustache or stubble. The female has been described as either Caucasian or South Asian, 40s, black hair, often seen wearing a head scarf and veil. Both suspects have thick accents. Different vehicles have been seen by witnesses, including: white minivan; grey or silver 4-dr car; black 4-dr car; grey Hyundai SUV. Police are aware of the following incidents. All have occurred during the afternoon our early evening. On June 17, 2015 a Kitchener resident was approached by a male and female who were selling gold jewelry out of their vehicle in the downtown Kitchener area. The victim paid a substantial amount of money for what she believed was real gold jewelry. Unfortunately when the victim got the jewelry appraised at a jewelry store she was informed the jewelry was worthless and didn’t contain any gold. The suspects were described as follows: male and female in their 40’s with a thick European accent driving a dark grey SUV. Police remind anyone to be cautious about making purchases from unknown persons and to report situations they believe to be suspicious.
