(BROCKTON, ON) – The South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding residents to beware of cons and scams following a report of an attempted scam from a resident in the Municipality of Brockton. On September 10, 2014 at 10:16 am, a report was made about a phone call from “Revenue Canada†advising of a $2,000 debt that better be paid or the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) would be contacted to make an arrest. The scam was recognized and no money or personal information was shared.
Scammers will often use the name of a legitimate business – even a government agency – in order to gain your trust. Some will even use the name of a police service in the course of their scheme to take your money. If you receive a strange, unsolicited request for money – take the time to verify it. Unsolicited means that you didn’t ask for it and scams are quickly revealed when you start asking questions.
There’s no magic to preventing fraud. If it sounds too good to be true, it most likely is. You work hard to earn your money, so work hard to protect it. Anyone interested in more information on fraud can contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1 888 495 8501 or check online at http://www.antifraudcentre.ca/.
The South Bruce OPP is requesting anyone with information that can assist police to call 1-888-310-1122. Should you wish to remain anonymous, you can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or send a web-tip to crimestop-gb.org, where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.
