(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON) – The South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is sending another reminder to watch out for cons and scams following recent reports of scam attempts in the detachment area.
On April 24, 2015, a resident of Arran-Elderslie Township reported an email from “Canada Revenue Agency” looking for personal information to file a tax return
On April 24, 2015, a resident in the Municipality of Kincardine reported a “Termination of Account” email from “Bruce Telecom” looking for information
Canada Revenue Agency and Bruce Telecom are both legitimate agencies, but neither had any involvement with these email messages. Both of these scam attempts were recognized, so no response was sent back.
Modern, tech-savvy, scammers can create very convincing scams – often times in the name of a legitimate company, so they can trick you into providing personal information or money. Your best defense is to verify any unsolicited message. Unsolicited means that you didn’t ask for it. Contact the actual agency and verify who you’re dealing with before you ever consider responding.
Fraud is a multi-million dollar enterprise that will only end when the con artists stop making money. It’s your money; you work hard to earn it, so work hard to protect it.
Anyone interested in more information on fraud can contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) at 1 888 495 8501 or check online at http://www.antifraudcentre.ca.
The South Bruce OPP is requesting anyone with information that can assist police to call 1-888-310-1122. Should you wish to remain anonymous, you can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or send a web-tip to crimestop-gb.org, where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.
