Saugeen Shores Police Press Release – 07Sept – 14Sept2015

September 7, 2015

At 4:30am, police received a report of suspicious person walking with a shopping cart on Highway 21. Police attended and found two males. They had been kicked out of a friend’s place and were walking home. One male was riding in the cart because he had an injured foot. Police returned the shopping cart to the business and gave the males a ride to Paisley.

A Toronto resident reported losing a small jewelry bag containing four rings while staying at a motel in Southampton. She believed the rings were lost on September 4th and valued them at $50000. Police assisted by attending at the business and having a search conducted but with negative results. On September 8th the complainant contacted police and reported she had found the rings tucked into one of her shoes.

September 8, 2015

At 11:00am, police attended a collision in which a pedestrian was struck by a car in the parking lot of the Independent Grocery store. A vehicle driving along the front of the store struck a pedestrian who was walking to the front entrance. The victim was knocked to the ground. Injuries did not appear to be serious but the victim was taken to hospital for precautionary reasons. No charges were laid.

Police received a report of a break, enter and theft to a detached garage on Ottawa Street in Southampton. A Jennings camouflaged compound cross bow, black plastic case and arrows with red leathers were taken. It is believed the theft occurred between September 2nd and 5th.

September 9, 2015

At 2:00pm, police attended to an assault complaint which resulted from a dispute between a mother and her adult son. There were allegations of a minor assault from both persons. The situation was calmed down and neither person wished to pursue charges. There were no injuries.

September 10, 2015

Police, fire and ambulance attended at a logging accident in a bush between Concession 2 and the Bruce-Saugeen Townline. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene. He had been struck by a tree. A previous press release has been provided with further details.

Police received a report of a stolen bike. The bike, a Free Agent BMX bike, was taken from a residence on Goderich Street. The bike is black, has Rockstar stickers and only one speed.

At 5:00pm, police received a report of a stolen RCA 32’ television from Canadian Tire. The incident is still under investigation.

September 11, 2015

At 4:16pm, police received a report of an accident between a car and a cyclist. A male was riding his bike on the sidewalk in the area of 371 Goderich Street when he was struck by a vehicle which was exiting the parking lot. The vehicle driver checked on the cyclist and then left the scene. The cyclist received a minor injury to his ankle. The car is described as a black Volkswagon Beetle and the driver was female. The vehicle driver is requested to contact police so that required reports can be completed.

September 12, 2015

At 6:30am, police received a report of a red distress flare being observed over Lake Huron in an area near Chantry Island. The OPP, Coast Guard and Trenton Rescue were contacted. A search was conducted by a C-130 Hercules aircraft and coast guard boats. At 11:30am, the search was called off with negative results.

At 1:30pm, police investigated a collision between a car and an e-bike on Goderich Street. The motor vehicle was stopped on Goderich Street in the area of Catherine Street when it was rear-ended by an e-bike. This resulted in damages to both vehicles and a minor injury to the operator of the e-bike. The driver of the e-bike has been charged with Careless Driving under the Highway Traffic Act.

At 6:25pm, a police officer investigated a suspicious vehicle on Goderich Street in Port Elgin. The vehicle, a 2000 Dodge Caravan was noted to have a truck licence plate on the rear and a different plate on the front. Neither licence plate was registered to the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle was found to be under suspension. The driver was charged with 7 offences under the Highway Traffic Act. After further investigation, police determined that the vehicle and driver were involved in a theft of gas from the Macs Convenience store in Southampton on September 3rd. One of the licence plates on the vehicle had been stolen from Saugeen First Nation. The male, age 22, from Chesley, ON, was charged with one count of theft of gas and with possession of stolen property (licence plate). It was also found that the OPP had warrants for his arrest. He was turned over to the OPP to be dealt with for the arrest warrants.

At 8:30pm, police were dispatched to a disturbance at a motel on Huron Street in Southampton. A domestic dispute between a couple who had rented a room resulted in damage to the room. A male, age 33, from Clinton was arrested and subsequently charged with mischief, contrary to the Criminal Code.

September 13, 2015

At 1:00am police received a report of two males leaving a licenced facility on Goderich Street and failing to pay for their bill. The owner followed the suspects and was able to determine where one of them lived. Police followed up and identified the involved persons. Although this is a criminal offence, the owner decided that restitution without charges was appropriate. The involved persons have been cautioned.

A traffic stop resulted in the driver being charged with Driving While Under Suspension, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act. The passenger, a youth age 16, was found to be in possession of cocaine and marijuana. He was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance.
