Robbery Suspect Injured – SIU Invokes Mandate

(SAUGEEN FIRST NATION, ON) – On August 8, 2013 at approximately 6:58 p.m., members of the Bruce Peninsula Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to an armed robbery at D & S Smokes and More Variety Store, located on Highway 21, Saugeen First Nation.

The investigation revealed that the accused produced what appeared to be a handgun and demanded cash from the clerk; the clerk was unharmed. The accused fled the scene in a 2007 Saturn vehicle with an undisclosed amount of cash.

At approximately 7:06 p.m., police observed the suspect vehicle in the area of Maryville Lake Road and Bruce County Road 14. A suspect apprehension pursuit ensued and the vehicle was eventually stopped on Silver Lake Road.

The accused was arrested and transported to the Bruce Peninsula OPP Detachment. The accused sustained a non-life threatening injury and was treated at a local hospital.

Thirty Seven year old Dennis Allen RICHARDS of South Bruce Peninsula is charged with the following offences:

Robbery with a weapon

Imitation firearm – use while committing offence

Flight from police

Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle

Drive while under suspension

Drive motor vehicle, no currently validated permit

Operate motor vehicle without insurance

He will appear in a Walkerton Court at a later date to answer to the charges.

The province’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) has been notified and has invoked its mandate. Though a parallel OPP criminal investigation is underway, further inquiries should be directed to SIU Communications at (416) 622-2342.
