A 27-year old man is in police custody after stealing a telescopic fork lift on Owen Sound’s harbour wall at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 2nd.
As ship workers were enjoying a break nearby, the accused jumped into the driver’s seat of the fork lift and started driving it southbound towards the city’s downtown core. Hearing the forklift start-up and drive away, the workers immediately ran after it and were able to get it stopped and recovered it a short distance away. The culprit initially fled, but returned to the scene of the crime a short time later at which time Owen Sound Police Service officers placed him under arrest.
The man, who had been reported missing by West Grey Police Service on March 30th, 2016, was also on several conditions of probation. He is charged with theft under $5000, and 2 counts of failing to comply with probation. He remains in the custody of Owen Sound Police Service to await a remand hearing.
The replacement value of the forklift is in the $115,000 range. It was not damaged during the event.
