(GODERICH, ON) – Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged a 28-year-old driver with nearly two-dozen charges following a traffic stop that took place yesterday afternoon in the Town of Goderich.
Around 1:10 p.m. a member of the Huron OPP Street Crimes Unit observed a black Ford Fusion parked on Bruce Street East. The investigating officer had suspicions the Fusion was possibly stolen so some enquiries were made that indeed confirmed the rental vehicle was outstanding and was considered stolen.
Just over an hour later an OPP officer watched as a male walked up and entered into the Fusion. Within minutes the vehicle went mobile and began to travel westbound on Bruce Street toward Cambria Road. At 2:26 p.m. a Huron OPP officer conducted a traffic stop of the stolen vehicle.
While speaking with the male driver the investigating officer observed several signs that led the officer to believe the driver was impaired by a drug. The driver was placed under arrest and a demand was made to the driver for him to be further evaluated by a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE). The driver was then transported to the Huron OPP Detachment and the DRE evaluated the driver and formed the expert opinion the driver was impaired by a drug.
A subsequent search of the vehicle turned up suspected methamphetamine, cocaine, prohibited weapons (expandable baton & throwing knives), replica firearms (pellet gun and revolver) and stolen property consisting of cheques and mail.
During the course of the investigation police also determined the male driver was a prohibited driver and was failing to comply with conditions of his Probation order and Prohibition Order.
