Regional Police and partner agencies reach out to community’s newest residents

Waterloo Region, ON – Waterloo Regional Police, in partnership with the City of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Waterloo, are conducting the 10th annual Door Knocker Program in neighbourhoods surrounding the universities.
Police Officers, Bylaw Officers, WLU and UW Campus Police, and City of Waterloo Fire Department will be going door-to-door this evening starting at 6pm to speak with residents and deliver flyers containing a welcome message to students and information on living in Waterloo.
Members of Waterloo City Council, staff and student representatives from both Universities and neighbourhood groups will be greeting students, and along with the officers, delivering a message about being a good neighbour and encouraging others to do the same.
During this meet-and-greet opportunity, our newest residents will be able to ask questions and be provided with information that will help them adjust to their new homes and life in Waterloo Region:

Resources available to students to improve quality of life on and off campus;

Learn that enforcement is firm but fair for offences like public intoxication, noise and public nuisance, and adherence to safety rules for student pedestrians and cyclists;

Police want to help students with safety and security and encourage everyone to do their part by locking valuables, securing doors and windows and closing curtains when privacy is important. Safeguard bicycles with a good quality lock and store in a well-lit area;

Students who encounter rental problems may contact on-campus housing offices or the City of Waterloo for advice on where to obtain help;

The benefits of establishing contact and meeting your neighbours as a good-will gesture while providing mutual assistance if needed;
