At last night’s council meeting it was revealed that council can now sell your home if your are two years behind on your taxes. It was also revealed there is a record number of Winghamites behind on their taxes. To make the situation even worse, if you are behind on your water and sewer bill council adds that to your tax bill as well.
Not only do we have the highest taxes around, our water and sewer rates are the highest we can find. There is an apartment tax that cripples multi unit buildings, where one building can pay $5,000/year more than someone with the same water/sewer usage and connection. Of course if you are on council, or use to be on council, you can get a sweet deal no one else can get. Sad but true.
Since council will put your $75/month for basic water and sewer on your taxes, you can literally lose your home for having a pipe burst or running toilet that leads to massive water bills. NOTE: Town Hall was cooled (or is still cooled) via cold tap water running through the radiator system and going down the drain.
