(ST.MARYS, ON) – On Sunday August 16, 2015, shortly after 2 p.m., a Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer was dispatched to the Goderich Exeter Railway line behind the Shur Gain plant (600 James St. S.), where the Toronto to London Via passenger train had struck railroad ties that had been placed on the tracks.
The Via engine pulling two coach cars struck the railroad ties that had been placed there by unknown person(s) sometime between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Sunday August 16th. The incident did not cause a derailment and no injuries were reported however minor damage was caused to the engine. The train was able to continue its scheduled run with only a minor delay.
The possibility of a derailment, injuries and major damage exists when dangerous acts like these are committed. This is not a joke but a serious criminal act! The Perth County OPP would urge anyone who may have seen suspicious persons at or near the tracks on Sunday to contact them immediately at 1-888-310-1122. Should you wish to remain anonymous, you may call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), and you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000
The Perth County OPP is continuing their investigation into this incident.
