Rail Safety Week

The week commencing Monday April 28 and ending Sunday May 4, has been designated as “Rail Safety Week 2014.”

Every year in Canada approximately 300 collisions and trespassing incidents occur at highway/railway crossings and along railway tracks, resulting in the death, or serious injury of nearly 130 people. Last year in London, two pedestrians lost their lives and a third was injured, after being struck by a passing train.

This week, members of the London Police Service, CP Police, CN Police and Transport Canada will promote education and conduct enforcement at various railway crossings within our community.

In specific, we would like to remind motorists and cyclists to obey the crossing signals at all times. Similarly, we would encourage pedestrians to cross at designated railway crossings and remind them that crossing at non designated locations is not only illegal, but unsafe.

Please remember to “Look, listen and live.”
