(PERTH COUNTY, ON) – Weather conditions and driver actions have contributed to thirteen collisions across Perth County since November 1, 2017.
The distance required to stop a moving motor vehicle doubles when roads become wet or snow covered. To compensate for this, drivers must increase the space between their vehicle and the vehicle ahead of them.
Members of the Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) continue to investigate preventable collisions, and are advising the public that speed is still a largely contributing factor. Failure to slow down during inclement weather conditions can result in the inability to maintain control of your vehicle should you be required to stop.
Take time to plan accordingly before heading onto the road. Ensure that gas tanks are at least half full at all times, check that cell phone batteries are charged, purchase or prepare a winter survival kit for your vehicle, keep windshield washer fluid filled and carry an extra jug, clear windows and roof of snow and ice, and use full headlights during poor or darkened conditions. Day time running lights do not engage your tail lights and can make it difficult for drivers behind to see your vehicle.
For road closures, tune into local radio stations, or visit the Ministry of Transportation website at http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/traveller/trip/index.shtml or 1-800-268-4686.
Weather conditions in Perth County can be treacherous and it is every driver’s responsibility to slow down, and arrive safely.
To report concerning driving behaviour, pull over and call 9-1-1. For non-emergencies, call 1-888-310-1122.
