Press Release – 10 February 2014 to 16 February 2014

10 Feb 2014,

9:29 am received a call of a loon (the bird) laying in a snow bank near the Port Elgin Cemetery. Kind of unusual for here and this time of year. MNR indicate they fly south to open water and because most of Huron is frozen they have no where here to stay. The bird flew away later in the day.

11:27 am police attended a motor vehicle collision in the Walmart parking lot. Very minor to no damage was observed.

11 Feb 2014,

5:29 pm police received a report of a motor vehicle collision that had occurred a week previous. Damage at the time seemed minor but upon getting an estimate the damage was about $2200.

If a motor vehicle collision appears to have a total damage of over $1000 (total of all vehicles involved) you are required to report the collision to police. It does not take much of a collision to cause $1000 in damage these days. It is far better to go ahead and report the collision to police and have them take a report.

12 Feb 2014,

3:45 pm police responded to a motor vehicle collision in the rear parking lot at the high school. The damage was minor and a report was taken.

14 Feb 2014,

8:31 am police responded to a Southampton address to a report of the theft of wood. Approximately 60 – 4×8 sheets of plywood was stolen overnight from a property on Peel St where a house was under construction.

8:34 am police further responded to a theft complaint at a business on Railway St where a 24 foot yellow extension ladder was stolen overnight. Video shows a male in a white extended cargo van was responsible for the theft.

Anyone with information on these two incidents is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers.

10:30 am, a Saugeen Shores resident received an email that appeared to be from CIBC wanting the person to update their personal information. A lot of on line frauds called “Phishing” pretend to be a trusted website using logos downloaded from the internet. Banks do not do business this way, if you receive them it is best to call the bank and let them know.

14 Feb 2014, at 7:10 pm Philipp ROEDGER 23 years of Port Elgin was arrested for Trafficking a Controlled Substance, (Marijuana) by attempting to sell 15.2 grams of marihuana to an undercover police officer. A Controlled Drugs and Substances Act search warrant was executed at a Port Elgin apartment later that evening. As a result of the search police located approximately 127 grams of marijuana. A female in the residence was arrested and charged with being in Possession of a Controlled Substance over 30 grams. ROEDGER was charged for the offences of Trafficking a Controlled Substance, Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking and being in Possession of a Controlled Substance over 30 grams. The total weight of Marijuana seized is 142.2 grams, a total street value of $2,133.

15 Feb 2014,

Police have received several reports of people out walking on the ice on Lake Huron near Chantry Island. People need to be very aware of the danger they are putting themselves in and the danger they will place the emergency services worker who will attempt to rescue them should they go in the water. The ice on lake Huron is not very stable and combining that with the water flowing into the lake from the Saugeen River creates uncertainty as to how thick the ice is. You would not last very long in the water this time of year. Please be safe.

11:32 pm police conducted RIDE in Saugeen Shores with no violations found.

16 Feb 2014,

11:58 am police responded to a motor vehicle collision at Market and Bricker St Port Elgin. A vehicle west on Market St slid through the stop sign and struck a vehicle north bound on Bricker St. No injuries. The offending driver was charged with a stop sign offence.

Attached is a report on motor vehicle collisions in Saugeen Shores for 2013. This will be posted on our website soon.
