Sexting/Texting
Please have a very frank discussion with your children about sexting. With greater frequency we are investigating youth sharing naked photographs with their electronic devices. Quite often a request will be texted from a friend or boyfriend requesting naked photographs to be sent. Once the photograph is taken and sent it cannot come back. If it is a photograph of a young person that comes under the definition of child pornography and it is shared by friends that becomes distribution of child pornography.
Snapchat is a program that allows you to send a photo to someone with one to ten seconds of retention before it is erased. Problem is there are applications that can be downloaded to recreate this photograph and the recipient can always just take a screen shot of the photo and keep it.
Talk to your children, the main message should be to know that anything you send out by electronic means will always be out there so don’t send anything you don’t want to see again some-day.
