The London Police Service will be hosting collection locations on Prescription Drug Drop-Off Day on Saturday, May 9, 2015 between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at the following locations:
– Loblaws parking lot, Fanshawe Park Road at Richmond Street
– Cherryhill Village Mall – parking lot on south side and inside mall
– White Oaks Mall – parking lot on north side
All Londoners are asked to take a moment and clear out their family medicine cabinets. The rising rates of recreational misuse of prescription drugs by youth, in particular opioids, can lead to addiction and unintended, tragic consequences. We can all play a role in safeguarding our families.
Citizens wishing to dispose of outdated, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs may do so anonymously at the location nearest them usually without having to get out of their vehicles.
This effective drug-abuse prevention strategy helps get unused and expired prescription medication out of Canadian homes by providing a safe and convenient method of disposal, while also encouraging people to take unused medications back to a pharmacy on a regular basis.
Last year, Canadians dropped off 3000 lbs of pharmaceutical products to drop-off sites across the country on this one day. London Police Service received 91.6 kilograms (201.6 pounds) of prescription medications from approximately 130 citizens.
“Police in communities across Ontario recognize prescription drug abuse can lead to increases in a wide spectrum of violent acts and property crimes. We support this excellent initiative as another way to reduce this threat to public safety in a secure manner” said Superintendent Ron Taverner, Chair of the OACP Substance Abuse Committee.
The London Police Service is working with the London, Elgin, Middlesex Crime Stoppers, Cherryhill Village Mall, White Oaks Mall, Loblaws – located at 1740 Richmond Street North, and Westervelt College.
The idea behind the program is to increase the awareness of our community about the importance of going through their medicine cabinets to find out what medications are expired and what medications they do not use anymore. It is our hope that everyone will learn that they can dispose of their expired and unused medications properly on this day and throughout the year at their local pharmacy.
